All Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science, and Aerospace Engineering students are required to have an IBM compatible laptop computer. Information is given below on the minimum computer specifications and the software required.

Required Hardware and Operating System (Effective Summer 2006)

The minimum computer specifications are as follows:

  • Windows XP Professional operating system (XP Home is not adequate)
    • Please note that we recommend students postpone adopting Windows Vista. Some compatibility issues with specialized engineering software and data acquisition hardware have not yet been resolved with the Vista operating system.
  • 1.6 GHz CPU or higher (Pentium M, Core Solo, Core Duo or equivalent)
  • 1.0 GB RAM (2.0 GB RAM recommended)
  • 32 MB graphics RAM with dedicated graphics processor, minimum
    • We use the Pro/Engineer graphics software in EML2023.  This is a graphics intensive application.  Integrated Graphics with shared memory is not recommended.
    • Display resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher.
  • 60 GB hard disk drive, minimum
  • 10/100 MB/sec ethernet
  • Wireless Networking (Wi-Fi Certified IEEE 802.11 b or g)
  • CD-ROM Drive (DVD-RW recommended)
  • USB port
  • 3-button mouse (mice with scroll wheels that can be pressed will typically work)

Laptop computers with faster processor speeds and greater storage capacity are readily available and students may wish to purchase a machine with capabilities beyond the minimum specifications listed here. However, a notebook computer that meets these minimum specifications will be adequate for a multi-year period of use.  The MAE department does not make any recommendations on particular models or vendors. Discounts to students are often available from computer vendors.

Wireless ethernet has been installed in most classrooms and study areas on campus. Many notebook computers now have built in wireless ethernet capability.  Other notebook computers can access wireless ethernet by using a special PCMIA interface card.  These cards cost approximately $100.  Information about the wireless network can be obtained at http://nslog.nerdc.ufl.edu/wireless/wireless.html

Required Software

Students must obtain an office software suite such as Microsoft Office or WordPerfect Office.  This can be obtained at an academic discount at the UF bookstore or at an off campus bookstore.

Certain courses will require student purchase of engineering software. Students must purchase the Student Edition of Matlab which is available at the campus bookstore at a price of approximtely $100. Matlab is utilized in a variety of courses and some students find it to be a handy programming language for general use.

Students are also required to purchase LabVIEW Student Edition for use in EML3301C Instrumentation and Measurements Lab. The textbook used for this course inlcudes the software.  Wait until the semester in which you take the course to purchase this text to ensure you have the latest version of the software. Information on this textbook is available at the UF bookstore and off campus bookstores.

EML2023 Computer Aided Graphics and Design utilizes the Pro/Engineer software package. Students will be given instructions for obtaining the software at the first class meeting each semester.

Software and Computer Training

Sometimes students wish to obtain additional training on the use of their computer. Free NETg information technology courses are available to all UF students, faculty, and staff. You can select individual course titles, groups of related courses covering specific areas of interest, or take vendor-approved training courses that are geared directly toward industry-recognized certification tests
